The aim of the Master MA in Cultural Heritage Management and Sustainability is to offer a predominantly professionally-oriented education for leaders managing the cultural heritage. This Program is designed to improve managerial skills in the field of site management, architectural heritage and historical towns, museum studies, tourism, conservation of the natural heritage and biodiversity.

The MA – Master of Arts in Cultural Heritage Management and Sustainability program integrates social, economic and environmental theories and applications for sustainable business practices aimed at the conservation of the heritage for future generations.
The ways in which we understand and manage our ‘cultural heritage’ around the world are changing rapidly. While the physical remains of our past: buildings, landscapes, city streets, archives, artefacts and archaeological sites, and the intangible associations of tradition, language, and memory, continue to influence the ways in which we live our lives. Additionally, managers have to be aware of the risks of damaging our natural heritage and be responsible for the conservation of our landscape and biodiversity.
This course poses challenging questions about our thinking and practice, and offers students the opportunity to explore this through a series of international projects, working in partnership with heritage organisations. We will help you set heritage in its social, political and economic context, and support you in a series of placements so that you can see how this plays out on the ground, for real.
This course combines sustainability knowledge and practice with the efficient management of touristic areas, historic buildings, museum collections, parks and archaeological sites. It also asks questions about the ways in which these resources are sustainably managed, presented and explained, and explores these through a series of encounters with heritage managers and heritage places. What challenges are leaders working in the field of cultural heritage management currently facing? What choices do they make in dealing with them? How will current pressures on funding for heritage in Switzerland, and further afield, and ambitions to increase it, shape our experience of visiting and working in museums and heritage sites? How do we communicate about cultural heritage management? And how will our wider understanding, management and preservation of heritage change as a result?
Trying to answer such questions provides a framework for practical work in the sector, underpinned by hands-on, supportive teaching. As well as thinking about the management of cultural heritage, we want you to become involved in a range of projects, working with our partners in local, regional and national heritage organisations, and to gain experience on the ground.

Requirements for the MBA in Sustainability Management:

• Official Certified University Transcripts and Diplomas, with certified translation if not originally in English
• Official Certified Transcript of Master Studies (if applying for transfer of credits)
• CV / Resumé indicating both complete education and any work experience in reverse chronological order
• Bank statement showing at least CHF 9000 or equivalent (only for students in need of a visa or student permit)
• Study plan indicating why the student chooses Switzerland, why Sustainability Management School, what the student plans to study, how long it will take, what degree(s) the student intends to achieve, and the student’s plans to leave Switzerland after completing his/her studies (mandatory for students in need of a visa or a permit)
• If you are not a native English speaker, or if you have not spent the last 3 years in an English-taught school: TOEFL (minimum score of 550 PBT or 80 IBT), or IELTS (minimum score of 5.5), or other Standardized English Placement Exams. MA – Master of Arts in Cultural Heritage Management and Sustainability program organization:

• Length: 3 terms (full-time program) or 6 terms (part-time program).
• Content: 13 core modules, 1 elective (8 options: Sustainable Management of Parks, Protected Areas and Urban Landscape; International Marketing and Greenwashing; Green Economy; Future Urbanism; Natural Resources Management; Fashion Management; Banking; Accounting and Tax for Sustainability) as well as projects in collaboration with our local and international partners. Your dissertation may represent an extension of your placement work, the opportunity to complete a new project, or a more traditional, research- based dissertation.
• Areas of study: Sustainable Development, Cultural Areas and Creative Industries, Leadership and Development of Professional Skills.
• Small classes. Upon request, individual lectures.
• Entry Requirements: Students admitted to graduate degree programs are demonstrably qualified for advanced academic study.
